Il a été marié du 18 novembre 1995 au 8 avril 2005 à Alexandra Christina Manley, née à Hong-kong le 30 juin 1964. Ils ont eu deux enfants, le Prince Nikolai (1999) et le Prince Felix (2002). Joachim et Alexandra Christine Manley originaire de Hong Kong, s'étaient mariés au château de Frederiksborg, au nord de Copenhague.
